Though the port city has long established itself as a down-home, good-time burg — a place to unwind to a toe-tapping Celtic tune and a dram of whisky — those thirsty for spirits of the paranormal kind won’t be disappointed.

One of Halifax’s most infamous spooky sites is the Five Fishermen Restaurant and Grill, perched on the bustling corner of Carmichael and Argyle Streets. Having once served as a mortuary, it’s perhaps not surprising that the 194-year-old structure is equally known for its hauntings as well as its halibut.

The four-storey, brick-and-wood building opened in 1816 as a schoolhouse and was eventually taken over by a local family and turned into a funeral home.

It became the last stop of sorts for victims of two significant disasters of the 20th century — the sinking of the Titanic off Newfoundland in April 1912 and the Halifax Explosion of 1917. The explosion occurred when a supply vessel and a munitions ship collided in the harbour, killing 2,000 people and leaving some 9,000 injured.

Shane Robilliard, the Five Fishermen’s general manager, says tales of cutlery moving on its own, disembodied voices and shadowy figures have actually been good for business.

Robilliard recalls a recent instance when diners tried to send a text message from their table. But instead of the intended message, Robilliard says only one word flashed on the recipient’s mobile phone: death.

Don’t forget that PRS is coming to Toronto on May 27th!

PRS is looking for people to help us in Toronto. We need two teams, a “Street Team” and a “Staff Team”, each with about ten people. In exchange for your help, you’ll be getting a few fun extras at the event. If you would like to be a part of one or both of our teams, please answer the questions at the end of this email. Those chosen to help will be notified soon, and given more information about their roles!

“Street Team”

For this team, we need people who are able to get out there and tell that city that PRS is on its way! We will be asking you to put flyers up throughout Toronto. This will involve putting up flyers on cars, public bulletin boards, and anywhere else appropriate. Additionally, this will include asking local businesses if they would be willing to post a flyer for the show in their establishment. This task will require a few hours of your time over the few days leading up to the show.

“Staff Team”

Volunteers for this team will be helping out at the Great Hall during the evening of the event. They will be needed for both set-up and tear-down, beginning at 4pm and ending at about 11pm. Please note, however, that you will not be asked to miss the lecture itself. This team’s duties will include helping to set up chairs and merchandise, checking and collecting tickets at the door, assisting with merchandise sales, and helping take down the chairs and repack the merchandise after the lecture.

The “Extras”

Those of you chosen to work on our teams will be receiving a t-shirt of your choice, signed by PRS. You will also receive your choice of one of our PRS mugs. Additionally, you will get a special signed “Team” pass and the best seats in the house for the lecture. Last but not least, you will be invited to join the rest of the staff, as well as the cast, for a private Staff reception either before or after the event!
